If the field terminals are large and marked S1 and S1, it is almost
certainly a series motor. I would start by disconnecting all wires to
the motor, and jack up the rear wheels so the motor can run safely.
Connecting the field and armature in series, and power them with a
single 6v or 12v battery. I.e. battery + to armature A1, A2 to S1, and
S2 to battery -. Use heavy wire. The motor will draw a large starting
current surge, but then it should run smoothly at a fairly low current,
like 10-30 amps.
Reversing the field wires (or armature wires) will make it run in
reverse.
Once you are sure the motor is OK, then you can figure out what's going
on with the controller.
