RE: Junior Dragster questions
I think adopting a standard motor is quite a good idea as it makes the
electric rules similar to the ICE rules, and it is a limitation which is
readily understood by the ICE crowd. They wouldn't have a clue if the
rules limited controllers, current, voltage, or batteries.
For the same reason, I think the suggestion of basing the EV Jrs on a
standard ~2hp golf cart motor is excellent. While it may be true that
one may spend about as much for this motor as a comparable ADC model, and
that golf cart motors may not be readily available in every locale (neither
are ADC motors), it has the advantage that the gassers understand what
a golf cart motor is in the same way EVers appreciate what a 5hp Briggs &
Stratton is. This will be of great benefit when the EVs prove themselves
to be competitive and there is any outcry against the use of unfamiliar
(and therefore unfair) "high-tech" or "special" ADC motors.
A far more effective message is communicated by taking the motor out of
the ubiquitous, unassuming golf cart and building a competitive vehicle
around it, IMHO.
It would truly be a shame if an EV Jr required a $5k controller to be
competitive with a $5k ICE Jr. At $5k, I suppose we're talking about
the EVCL 'Zilla which is just a tad overkill in terms of power capability;
perhaps if the EV Jrs take off Otmar might consider offering a similarly
featured model with less of the spendy silicon in the $2k ballpark...
anyone for an EVCL "Newt"?
Cheers,
Roger.

Why not just set a weight limit on the motor?
A ninety pound motor ought to be plenty.
