Charter:

The EV Electric Vehicle Discussion Mailing List is intended to provide a
forum to discuss the current state of the art and future direction of
electric vehicles. It is *not* intended to discuss either EV
appropriateness or comparisons with other transportation primary drive
modes such as the venerable internal combustion engine. Those "discussions"
are best relegated to the appropriate usenet newsgroup.

To subscribe:

Be prepared when you subscribe to the EV list to receive over 100 email
messages per day. If you would prefer to receive all of the list mail in a
single daily email message, see the digest command under EV Listserv
Commands below.

Send the following email message:

Replace <your name> with your name. Don't type the angle brackets "<>".

TO: listproc@listproc.sjsu.edu
SUBJECT: thanks
MESSAGE: subscribe ev <your name>

SAVE the reply you receive from "SJSU ListProcessor(tm)"
<listproc@listproc.sjsu.edu>. It contains important information about how
to unsubscribe, post messages and get help. File it in a special folder so
you can refer to it months or years from now when you need to unsubscribe
or get help. Also bookmark this web page. I update it periodically based on
information from the list administrators.

Once signed up, send email messages to: ev@listproc.sjsu.edu
The list will not accept messages from your email address if your
subscription is not completed or expired.

To un-subscribe:

The EV List Archive

All of the email on the EV List is saved in a hypermail archive located at:
 http://www.crest.org/ev-list-archive/

This archive is fully searchable and the search function is limited to the
archive. This is an extremely useful tool for finding previously posted
information on batteries, controllers, car types, companies, people's
contact information, etc. If it's been posted to the list since August
1997, it's in the archive and you can search for it!
Commercial Free. (I pay for it.) Archive goes back to 8/26/97.
Update: Recent months are missing from this Archive. Crest has them on tape
but is waiting for a disk upgrade to put them online.

Archive sponsor and administrator: m.t.thompson@ieee.org [madkatz]

Other EV list archives

eGroup archive http://www.egroups.com/list/ev/
Features a Folders section (where anyone can add links to FAQ type
material, etc).
Advanced features, like folders, require your email address to login. You
will undoubtedly receive email advertising if you login.
Commercial. Archive goes back to 6/25/98.

EV List newsgoup

news:alt.binaries.electric-veh
alt.binaries.electric-veh instructions and charter

The news group's primary purpose is for posting binaries or images that are
NOT allowed to be sent to the EV List. Such large files on the EV List are
a great inconvenience to EV List subscribers on a low speed connection or
modem.

Newsgroup administrator: Rich Tietjens

HTTP access to the EV List ftp site: http://www.best.com/~ziggr/ftp/evl/
FTP access to the EV List ftp site:ftp://ftp7.ba.best.com//pub/ziggr/evl/

Primarily for archiving shared files.

Common listserv commands

Listserv commands are emailed to the listserver. It automatically processes
the command and sends a reply stating the results of the command or any
errors found. The subject of the message may be left blank. Put each
command on a separate line. A sample listserv email comand:

TO: listproc@listproc.sjsu.edu
SUBJECT:
MESSAGE:
set ev mail ack
query ev

Common commands

   * set ev mail digest
     Deliver all of the ev list email each day in a single large email
     message.
   * set ev mail
     Deliver each ev list email as soon as it is sent.
   * set ev mail ack
     Receive copies of your own email messages sent to the ev list. By
     default, you WILL NOT see your messages sent to the ev list.
   * query ev
     Display all the settings for your subscription to the EV list.
   * thanks
     A quick way to see if the server is working.
   * signoff ev
     Unsubscribes you from the EV List.
   * end
     Instruct the list server stop processing commands in the remaining
     lines of the message.
     Useful for getting the listserv to ignore your signature.

Related email discussion lists

   * GM EV1 GM's EV1 electric vehicle.
   * Honda EVplus Honda EV plus electric vehicle.
   * power-assist Power assisted bicycles
   * Elec-Trak Electric lawn tractors including GE Elec-Trak.

Tips

   * Email filters and EV: subject line prefix

     The EV List generates a large volume of email, 30-100 messages / day.
     This can be overwhelming. A recurring request is to have the subject
     lines prefixed with EV: to make them easy to identify in your email
     program. The EV listserver is not very flexible and relying on the
     senders of email to use the prefix consistently is unrealistic.

     Not to Worry! Your email program probably has email filters. You can
     create a filter to put all messages that have this line in their
     header:

     Sender: owner-ev@listproc.sjsu.edu

     to a separate email folder. Now all of your EV mail will be separated
     from your other work or personal email and organized in it's own
     folder. Refer to the on-line help or the manuals for your email
     program to learn more about email filters and how to configure them.

Some Free Email Services

Expect to get a healthy dose of advertising if you use a free email
service.

   * JUNO has local dial up numbers and software.
   * hotmail from microsqish requires internet access.
   * YAHOO! Mail requires internet access.
