MOSCOW, Idaho (AP) - About 50 University of Idaho students are
involved in a competition that could bring electric-vehicle technology
to consumers.

The university is one of 15 working to convert a 2000 Chevrolet
Suburban from gasoline power to an alternative propulsion system.
"Everyone is interested in the environment," said Heather Jones, a
senior mechanical engineering major. "We all have to breathe."

Some of the students working on the Suburban will have the opportunity
to travel to Mesa, Ariz., in June for a competition hosted by the
General Motors Desert Proving Ground.

The vehicles will be tested in more than 10 technical events.

The competition requires a two-thirds reduction in emissions, two-fold
increase in fuel economy, the vehicle has to be able to accelerate to
60 miles per hour in 12 seconds, tow a 7,000-pound trailer up a 5
percent grade and maintain seating and storage capacity.

General Motors delivered the Suburban to the university in December.

Eric Clarke, a member of the team, said emissions standards continue
to get more rigid. Sponsoring the competition is a way for companies
to have access to research and recruit workers.
