RE: Hybrid project

Hi all,

This idea has been floating around in my head for awhile, and I thought I
would share it.

How about this for a hybrid:

Donor: Honda Civic Wagon, 2 wheel drive, fitted with the transmission and
shifter from 4 wheel drive version. Couple an 8" ADV DC motor to the former
output coupler that would have led to the rear drive shaft. Modify the rear
spare tire well and cargo area to accept 10 Optimas, a Zivan NG3 charger,
and a DCP-1200 controller. Fit the original ICE engine with a 3500 watt 120
volt generator, belt driven from the crankshaft.

The result could operate as a pure electric, direct drive, by leaving the
ICE off and the transmission in neutral with the 4wd selector engaged. This
would allow the motor to drive the final drive gears by putting power in
where it normally would come out. Hooked up direct like this, range and top
speed would be limited.

It could also operate as an ICE. The 4wd selector would be switched to 2wd
thus uncoupling the motor and preventing over-reving. The car woould then
be driven in the conventional ICE fashion. The engine driven generator
could recharge the batteries, or provide power for the electric heater or
air conditioner that would replace the ICE versions. One might even
eliminate the stock alternator and maintain 12 volt power from a DC/DC
converter powered by the battery pack or the large generator.

As an EV the range and performance would be limited, but it could probably
handle many short in city trips. With the insurance of always haveing the
ICE to fall back on, the chances of over discharging the pack would be
reduced. With oportunity charging, one might even be able to go quite a few
days without ever starting the ICE.

Now, where have I gone wrong? Yes the car would be heavy. Yes the ICE fuel
economy would suffer. Yes interior space would be reduced. But, would the
car really work? What do you think?

Thanks,
