I've read many times that a well designed (not excessively small pulleys and
with adequate "wrap around") and adjusted V-belt drive can easily achieve 90% at
rated load. At light loads it gets worse, though. This also fits my own
observations, where a well designed drive shows no appreciable temperature rise
in the belt or pulleys.
