FLEMING ROADSTER BROUGHT TO LIFE BY DONATED POWER

For four years, students in the power systems program at William
Fleming High have been rebuilding a 1932 Ford "high-boy" roadster.
They have welded, wired and done fiberglass work.

Now, thanks to a donation of 26 electric vehicle batteries from
All Pro Bumper to Bumper on Williamson Road, the roadster can run.

"This is important to the kids for them to see alternative power
sources, like an electric car, as a viable thing," said Charlie
Overfelt, the students' teacher. "Later, they won't be scared of
buying an electric car or a hybrid."

The six-volt, deep-cycle batteries are worth about $2,000. Six of
them were donated by the store and the other 20 were given by the
store's supplier, Exide Batteries in Richmond.

"I just thought it would be pretty neat for us to be involved in
it," said David Saunders, manager of All Pro and a William Fleming
alumnus.

The car has appeared in Rod and Custom Magazine and has involved
more than 200 students through the years. Overfelt said that with the
batteries, the car can go between 70 and 80 miles on a single charge.
