Ammeter shunt

I know this is in the archives, but I am not having much luck with the
searchability there...What I remember is that the Shunt goes either in
on the most negative run to the controller to read battery amps, or
between positive output of the controller and the motor to read motor
amps. Correct?
I sort of remember (?) that there was a consensus on  the best placement
or most useful information being battery amps.
I did find and re-read the Heinemann breaker mounting thread, and
decided for vertical placement for that.
It feels so good to be doing some high voltage wiring!
