RE: 5000 pound EV???

Thanks, John. I was hoping you would have some insight, and you do.

OK, my dream of direct drive is not such a great idea. For the sake of
reliability and economy, I will have to use a tranny. That's not so bad.
However, the tranny that is currently in the truck is a NP435. It has no
syncros in first and very hard to shift when it was new. There is no
mistaking that this is a heavy duty truck tranny. Since I will not be using
this vehicle as a truck, I will not want that tranny. So... That tranny
has to go!

Now, the question is, if I could pick any tranny (and I can), what tranny
should I use? Well, I know this is going to open a can of worms.... If I
could pick ANY tranny it would be an automatic. The question is, which one?
Should I keep the torque converter?

THE perfect AT would have a lock-up converter, be light, and easy to find at
the U-pull-it yards.

Has there been any new revelations regarding ATs? I could use some words
from those that have done it.

I'm going to check the archives.

Thanks,

FEF

In summary, I like direct drive for racing and for use in light weight
EVs,
but I recommend using a manual transmission for affordable street EV
projects,
in that the transmission will allow the motor to be smaller, the controller
to
be less powerful and more affordable, and the battery pack to be treated
more
gently. In a hefty conversion that weighs around 5000 lbs., the advantages
of
the transmission become even more apparent.
