Re: PVs on EVs (was: Use Market Forces)

Instead of using the solar panels for extra range it seems that a small area of panels to charge a 12V battery for accessories would be useful.  Instead of using a DC-DC converter to power 12V accessories you could have a separate 12V battery that is charged eliminating the need to charge it separately.
Has anyone done this before? And if so, how did it work out?

Thanks,
Rod

Sometime back I mentioned a very tidy looking solar assisted commuter car
design I saw on the web.  Today I seem to have located some more info on it.
It belongs to or is associated with Kyocera  and is called the SCV-4.
According to the webpage at: http://www.kyocera.de/products/car.htm it can
go 40 Kph (25 mph) for 130 Km ( 81 miles) without sunlight or as much as 250
km (155 miles) with.  I guess that means if you only went 120 Km (75 miles)
on really sunny days you conceivably would not need to plug in at all.   Of
course you also would have to deal with a ludicrously expensive NEV that
goes 25 mph, and weights 1532 pounds.

Realistically, it seems to me it should be possible to develope a primarily
solar powered car, that would cover modest commuting needs like mine.  21
miles round trip, no speeds over 40 mph, driver and one passenger, some hill
climbing capability.  Some years ago the old Mother Earth News folks
develpoed a kind of "minimum car", bascially a tubular cage frame on
motorcycle wheels that reportedly delivered over 100 mpg with a small diesel
engine.  Perhaps a solar electric version could do for this kind of project.
