Prizm Batteries
Earlier today there was a posting indicating how many batteries are in
the Prizm that is for
sale on ebay. The number that was posted is incorrect and could
lead someone to miscalculate when figuring battery replacement.
The Prizm
that is posted on eBay needs a total battery pack replacement.
This involves replacing 50 G12V26Ah10C Hawker Genesis batteries.
These batteries are configured into two parallel strings that produce 300
volts. Replacing this pack is not a task that should be taken on
by those who are not familiar with this type of work. Just lowering
the 1150 pound pack requires a lift and a battery lift table. The
local (Raleigh, NC) electric utility EV shop estimates that to have them
replace the batteries would cost approximately $3750. I encourage anyone
who purchases this or any similar vehicle to realize that this is not a
vehicle that was built in someones backyard and can be maintained by the
local conversion guy down the street! They should have someone like
the above utility who has people trained on these vehicle perform this
service.
As was stated before by others, battery replacement in this vehicle
is expensive! But as with any project such as this or building your
own vehicle you need to figure the total cost and what you are trying to
obtain. If you want a professional conversion, that looks and operates
like a factory built vehicle, this may be a vehicle you want to consider.
If you want to be able to use the infrastructure that has been installed
in your are, this may be it. Thousands of people drove these vehicles
in utility ride-n-drives across the country and realized that driving a
EV could be someone more than a hobby!
An AC drive, high voltage system, such as in these vehicles is not someonething
that everyone can work on!
