Re: OT: wastful computing,

Guys,
This should be relable wastful non EV messages. Can you take this offline? I built printers for Apple for 9 years. Here are some facts.

Inkets consume less power than lasers
Inkets have a higher cost per page than lasers
Lasers are not always faster, as Lee would say it's not that simple!

Inkjet printers are cheaper. It's a razor blade buisness. They give away the print engine and make their money on the ink.

Some inkjet ink is waterproof
Some inkjet ink fades in sunlight

The startup time for a laser can be less then an inkjet. They just do different things.

If power consumption is your primary concern, buy an ink jet, turn it off then unplug it when not in use. Don't unplug it until it's turn off your you may be sorry. The power switch on many printer doesn't really turn it off.

If you want low cost per page, buy a laser and look for one with a contact fuser. It's only on when printing. No standby temp.

If anyone would like more info, I'd be happy to share what I know by seperate email. Let's not clog up the EV list.

<< Last year in my office we determined that our $1400 panasonic laser fax
machine is cheaper to operate to own than the $300 ink jet fax we had
previously. The laser @ $1400 comes with a cartridge with a 10,000 text
page life span, the ink jet will do about 200 text pages per cartridge.
With ink cartridges at $25 each, by the time the laser cartridge is
spent the machine will be very near paying for itself.

Not to mention that ink runs when it gets wet, and the ink machine was
always missing messages because it was out of ink.

I always us a laser printer for my Beer and Wine labels because the
laser will not run when it gets wet.
