The old saw is that in city driving, 60% of the energy is lost to
inertia.  If you look at the Gen1 GMEV1 performance stats, it shows
something like 140 miles range at constant expenditure, and 80 miles
in the city.  If there were no regen, the figure would be more like
60 miles.  So, this is how much the regen gave you.

Obviously, there is a long way to go.  The most range improvement
possible is 120%.  The EV1 does not attain this because it is very
inefficient when the motor is turning at slow speeds.  The silicon
transmission just does not match an ordinary mechanical one.  One EV
club member claimed that the starting efficiency was no more than a
few percent.  Anywhere efficiency is added along the way, the gain will
improve.
