It would have to be an extremely severe accident to spill any
significant amount of acid from a gel or AGM battery.

I have a Hawker AGM that was damaged in shipment. It has a hole in the
case several INCHES long, where you can see the internals. There is no
leakage, and the battery still works. Over time, the battery will dry
out from this hole, but in the meantime, it is not hazardous unless you
stuck a tool in the hole and dug out pieces of lead and the glass mat
that is absorbing the acid.
