RE: EV Insurance

That's what I did with my VW Pickup. I get very good rates through American
National and I didn't want to go somewhere else so I asked my agents and
they said I could list it as the normal VW or as Classic... I think was.

As a classic I can take is somewhere to get and estimate of the vehicles
value and then my insurance premium is based on the estimated value of the
car. If it's the value of my pickup is $10,000 for a 1980 VW EV then that
is the that they would insure it for and what I would be re-imbursed if it
was totaled.

Subject: Re: EV Insurance

A lot of people don't bother to tell the insurance company its is special
or the company simply doesn't care. A rep for Progressive told me they
just consider Alternative fuel vehicles to be the same car with some
aftermarket modifications... EV's would probably fall under the same deal.

Remember that collision insurance will only cover the blue book value of
the car, you might want to get some "additional equipment" insurance to
help cover the EV parts. Although if you are in an accident and the
insurance company totals the car you can usually buy it for its parts
value (which is usually less than the cash they give you). The ev
components are likely to be salvageable and you can use them again in your
next conversion.
