some pointers for 97 percent figure
>Personally I don't even buy the 97%, 80-90% maybe. Somebody dig up some
>FACTS and prove me wrong.
Why don't you dig up your own facts??!? Oh, alright already, I
know it's good for me, so here are a few more rough calculations
based on some rough data :-).
>From http://www.ucsusa.org (Union of Concerned Scientists), pollutants
are about 1 g/mile from an ICE engine.
>From http://www.caliso.com (CALISO), annual generation for the main
California grid (about 3/4 coverage) is 164 billion kwh.
>From http://www.arb.ca.gov 45.6 million tons annually of NOX.
>From experience, 1/3 kwh per mile of EV driving.
You can challenge any of these figures, especially the last one,
but before you do, please see note at end.
Miles worth of power produced 164 x 10**9 x 3 ~ 3 x 10**11
grams of pollutants produced 45.6 x 2000 x 454 x 365 ~ 365 x 454 x 10**5
g/mi ~ 365 x 150 / 10**6 ~ 5.4 x 10**-2
OK, this was off by a factor of 2, but it is a rough calculation.
The point is that within maybe about an order of magnitude, 97% is
reasonable. Miles could be larger, but g could also be larger, so
this is about it. This is not being compared to 80% (but this 80%
seems unreasonable, even given the latitude associated with the
calculation). This is being compared with 0% (EV's pollute as much
as ICE's).
The www sites are all referred to by the EVDL.
