At DC, electrons are blind.  At higher frequencies, something called the
skin effect takes over.  High frequency current flows only on the outer
surface of conductors.  The depth of penetration depends on the frequency,
wire material, etc.  However at the frequencies being discussed (DC up to
the 10s of kHz of controller switching) the skin effect is probably
negligable.  (Which is probably why Lee didn't mention it :-) ).
