Drag Racing Battery Update
I got two little cells in the mail this week. (I've been sick enough with
a nasty cold that I couldn't prop myself up to the bench until today to
test them.) These two cells are production batteries, not "special"
high-power batteries. They are going to send me some special batteries next
week!
These production cells would work fine for most of the drag racing
machines on the track. They are close to the specs of TMF cells under drag
racing load conditions.
I was able to tease just over 1,850 W/kg out of these production batteries
without really going to any extremes. I'm sure that I could push them over
2,000 W/kg with a little more coaxing. I should add that the load test I
ran simulated a run down the strip and I managed to pull about 1500 W/kg
average for the 10 second duration of the test. This is about 4 times the
performance of Hawker batteries.
Did I mention that I did 8 of these simulated runs down the strip without
recharging? I didn't run out of juice, I just got bored and moved on to a
different series of tests. This says that these cells should be very good
for other types of EV racing.
While these sound too good to be true, they do exist, but with a steep
price tag. If I weren't being sponsored, I don't think I could afford a
pack for the bike. I think a pack for the bike would cost about $10,000. It
might be more or less, but that is in the ballpark. I guess "speed costs"
even in EV racing.
I can't wait to test the "special" cells they are going to make for me
next week! These should put out significantly more power, and will cost
about the same to produce.
I'll keep you posted.
For those that are interested in getting some of these outrageously
powerful cells, contact Electric Louie at <electriclouie@aol.com> We will
be testing these out in the next month or so and complete packs should be
available by late summer if all goes as planned.
