A couple of listers have tried. I believe John Wayland at one time built
a series APU, and Bill Dube' also built one. I think both had some
problems with output control, but I'm not sure. I seem to recall that at
least one of them fried his controller as a result of APU problems.
This is not to say it's impossible, but I do think there are some
significant engineering problems. I suspect both John and Bill could
have solved the problems with the usual tools (time and money), but
perhaps concluded that a far simpler and more elegant solution is to just
drive a liquid-fueled vehicle for long trips. And of course now John has
"Sniffer."
Bill did say that it was awfully annoying to have that big engine roaring
away behind the car every time he stopped.
Perhaps one or both of them will have some other comments.
