I think the reasons that GM put lead in the EV-1 instead of nicads is 

	1.  Delco didn't make nicads and didn't know how

	2.  GM wanted it to fail in the marketplace, and lead batteries had been 
the downfall of every previous consumer road EV.

In the late 80s the computer makers tried lead batteries in laptops 
because of all the talk about "memory effect."  That trend lasted maybe a 
year.  They went back to nicads in a hurry.

>From what I've read, the only real problem with nicad is the relatively 
small world supply of cadmium.  Supposedly they couldn't make enough 
batteries for everybody to have a nicad EV.  They could make them for a 
few years while developing lithium-polymer, though.  But don't hold your 
breath.
