      Hi Cliff and All,
     A number of electric trucks used these in the
10's, 20's though they used the brake drum as a ring
gear and either put the motor shaft gear to the ring
gear or put the motor shaft in the center with 2-3
idler gears to the ring gear. These allowed
medium/high reductions keeping the motor smaller,
lighter.
     The best way is like the Sparrow with the motor
around the swing arm pivot reducing the unsprung
weight and allowing for gear/ belt reduction for a
smaller motor.
