I agree, the Beetle front end was designed for driving at no more than 40mph 
on bad roads, it doesn't even have equal length track rods! It's also heavy. 
The twin wishbone set-up from a Triumph Spitfire/GT6/Herald/Vitesse is light 
strong and has good brakes available, even to the extent of vented disks and 
four pot callipers. EVERY part is available new from Triumph specialists. The 
front upright was used on many '60's Formula 1 cars. The Vortex used the 
Spitfire suspension, just widening the track and using spreader plates to 
mount to the plywood moncoque.
