The motor on my Essisted bike is a forklift hydraulic pump motor. 3/4 hp,
15 min. rating (at full voltage at loaded RPM), not the best efficiency,
but certainly orders of magnitude more efficient than a starter motor. A
more appropriate 'used' motor for this would be the traction motor from a
walk-behind forklift or a battery powered floor sweeper, IF you can find
one small enough (I couldn't).
The best non motor starting use I have seen for a starter-motor is when I
fitted up for a friend an air conditioning compressor with a starter motor,
switch, etc., to provide tanked air on his truck (nominally for pumping up
tyres, but next time I saw him he had 'real' air horns fitted). One
compressor pump-up gets the motor quite warm, but since it had a long time
to cool down it is still going OK four years later. I wouldn't use one for
anything else, though (except starting engines, of course).
