But, the losses in the various stages of energy conversion would make direct drive from the engine a more feasible
option, at least for the initial push. Why waste so much energy?

Don't think of a diesel locomotive as a series hybrid, think of it as an
electric transmission. All electricity produced by the diesel engine
driven generator is immediatly used by the traction motors.
