How many electrical connectors does the motor have?

FWIW this motor won't produce 1/2hp, at least not continuously at the rated
current and voltage. 24V x 15A equals .48 hp input, assuming typical losses
you are looking at maybe 1/3 hp.

However it does look like you can safely run this motor at 36V and probably
even 48V, assuming 15 amps current that will produce 1/2 hp and 2/3 hp
respectively.

For an idea how a series/parallel contactor controller works check out:

For a simple 24V three speed controller (off, low, hi) and:

For a little more complex 48V 4 speed controller. This will also work at
24V if you use 6V batteries or 32V if you use 8V batteries.

Note: neither of these designs use a start up resistor, however it would be
simple enough to add another relay and resistor. If your motor draws large
amounts of current at startup this might be a good idea to add.
