Green Car Marketing & Communications has landed its biggest contract
to date promoting — what else? — electric cars.
The San Luis Obispo firm has been hired by Global Electric Motorcars
(GEM), a Fargo, N.D.-based subsidiary of DaimlerChrysler Corp., to
oversee public relations for the introduction of its neighborhood
electric vehicle in California.
GEM gave Green Car a test drive for three months before signing on for
the long haul, said Tom Fulks, the marketing group’s executive vice
president.
In addition to developing an advertising campaign for the cars, the
company will do event management and help develop programs and public
relations material for dealers.
Green Car will subcontract work to Grafix & More, which shares its
suite on Higuera Street.
The marketing firm is a 3-year-old division of Green Car Group, which
for 10 years has published an international newsletter for the
alternative vehicle industry. Founder Ron Cogan was previously a
writer and editor for Motor Trend magazine for 25 years.
Green Car has also conducted research that was used by the California
Air Resources Board in its hearings that led to the Zero Emission
Vehicle mandate. According to that rule, at least 10 percent of all
cars sold by automobile manufacturers in the state must be electric,
or a hybrid of gas-and-electric, by the end of 2003.
It was Green Car’s familiarity with the industry that attracted the
car maker to select the firm for the statewide campaign, said GEM
president Ken Montler.
The sensitivity to environmental issues in California is very high,”
Montler said. “It’s nice to see somebody who understands the
importance of those issues.”
Neither company would release specifics of the contract; Fulks said
the local company is worried national public relations firms could use
the information to steal the account away.
This is our chance to compete on a large scale for the first time,”
Fulks said.
He did say the contract will continue at least through Dec. 31, 2002.
