The blue box is an old VFD chassis. We are using it for its power
supply and monster heat sink. The present power section of the AC drive
occupies much less than 1/4 of the box. The blue box is about 18" x 12" x 10".
A liquid-cooled 500 HP AC drive would be two boxes. One would hold
the logic (like in the picture) and the other would hold the power stage.
The logic box would be about the size of a cigar box and the power stage
box would be about the size of a loaf of bread.
There is no doubt that a AC drive controller will take up more
space than a DC controller of the same HP. The system as a whole, however,
should weigh less, especially the spinning mass.
