I should have read Michael's post more carefully. If you use the choke in
addition to the boost transformer, you might need the higher voltage.
Eliminate the choke and the 12-18 volt boost transformer is sufficient.

12 volts works. 18 volts is plenty. 36-48 volts is way more than you will
ever need for a 144 volt pack.

You might be able to use a 24 volt boost if you want to take advantage of a
high current outlet or charge at a higher rate near the end of the charge
cycle. But I would look for something in the 15-18 volt range.
