The display in my Fluke 87 was getting hard to read as well -- Some
segments were losing their 'black.'  Thinking it wouldn't be a
warranty repair, I took the meter apart, removed the LCD module and
cleaned along its edges with a Q-tip.  A bit of delicate fiddling but
it worked in my case.
