I really would like to find an alternative to lead-acid, if possible.

If you want an alternative to Lead-Acid then just about the only available
choice is SAFT NiCads.  Several people on the list use them.  They cost
about 4-5 times as much as Lead-Acid, but they last (lifespan) at least 5
times as long, perhaps longer.

I've heard rumors of a company in Asia somewhere making EV size NiMH, but I
haven't heard about anybody being able to buy any yet.
