Absolutely.

As I said originally, this technique is used successfully by the
GE EV-1 SCR controllers that switch at 50-300Hz, but it could be
challenging to apply to a high frequency MOSFET controller...
unless the controller manufacturer was motivated to develop
software that provided a bypass contactor control and mode that
reduced the switching rate or otherwise guaranteed that the
switches would be on for the full 20-30ms contact open/close
interval...

Except contactors don't close instantaneously. If the controller isn't
in full on mode (100%) then, assuming a 15khz switching rate, the FET is
only on for less than 0.000066 seconds each time. I'm pretty sure the
contactors takes longer than that to close.
