The bulb replaces the resistor shown in the Curtis schematic. I use a 25
watt bulb on a my Curtis 1221b runing at 120 volts (a standard house lamp).
I unscrew this bulb before I equalize my Optimas (this can result in
voltages over 160 volts, a 1221b could fail over 160 volts). I unscrew the
bulb before I try to remove the drivers seat too (or else the seat frame
would break it on the way out). The voltage drop is 4 volts (no visible
light, very little heat).
