OT: Re: Electrifying Times Way Out Science - Way Off Topic!

I met Bill Nye and Ed Begley at the CARB hearings in Diamond Bar, Southern
CA. Later, watching an episode of "Bill Nye, The Science Guy" about psuedo
science came a concept which I now use to evaluate seemingly outlandish
product / science claims.

"Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof."

I think it's pretty sound logic. I now live by it.

For example an Extraordinary process could be decomposed and the inventors
could prove parts of it to gain credibility.

If they're so clever to come up with the invention, They should be clever
enough to invent a way to prove that it works to supporters and critics
like. If they can't, one must wonder how clever they really are, how
clever their invention is and how well they understand their own
invention.

If you can't explain something reasonably well to someone else, there's a
very good chance you don't understand it yourself. And the people who
invent these devices are presumably a bit more clever than your average
individual, so expecting them to explain it reasonably well is not an
unreasonable expectation.

The more you think about it:

"Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof."

The more it applies.

I'm not saying anything about the value of this fellow's discovery. As an
objective observation, one might move to the Phillipines to avoid the
CIA-NWO combine. Though I doubt that you'd really escpae the reach of the
CIA by doing so. You might also move there to make it _appear_ that you
are evading the CIA-NWO combine to lend creedence to your claims -
"I must have a great invention because everyone is chasing me - would you
like to invest?"
Or maybe the Phillipines provides an environment where there is less
expertise to provide informed independent confirmation / critique of the
claims. Maybe the investors there aren't so careful.

So I'm not really saying anything about the validity of this here. I'm
just saying that as the claims become more exotic that one needs to
continue to use critical thinking and even more critical thinking given
the nature of the claims, relative lack of verifiable evidence, etc.

The CIA may well be pursuing the inventors of red, blue and white LEDs to
protect the manufacturers of incandescent light bulbs.

Condescending, and saying that your audience doesn't understand because
they are operating on a lower level (dumber) than the inventor is sure to
win points and credibility! Of course, all Doctor's, Air Force Base
Personnel etc. are people with unimpeachable credibility.

The doctor's on TV selling diet plans are just making a buck like any
other marketing proffessional!
