Hi Phil,
I've heard that the Unimog drivetrain (other than the final drive/axles)
might not be up to the torque you could feed it by substituting an
electric motor for the stock engine. Check with guys who've hopped up
the ICE powerplant and see what they've found to break.
I'd be inclined to keep the stock powerplant intact as the prime mover
for the hybrid's generator (remember, in most cases you need a generator
with a rating similar to the original powerplant anyway) and to allow
operation as a parallel hybrid (i.e. traction power can come from ICE,
or electric, or both), and devise a way to couple the electric traction
motor into the drivetrain downstream of the bits that tend to break. I
particularly like the simplicity of a "powered drivehaft" using an 8 or
9" ADC with dual shafts inserted into the stock driveshaft. Given the
weight of the Unimog, you'd likely want one in each driveshaft. If you
can couple the motor into the drivetrain between the tranny and transfer
case, you could opt for a single Kostov and a regen controller.
Just a couple alternative ideas...
