Eric, 

I was considering doing about the same thing with a 140 series 7.5 hp
Mercury outboard and rich's BLDC drive at 48VDC or below. I am not a big
fan of high voltage near salt water. The merc likes to be spun at
~5000rpm at the input, so I was thinking I might be able to get a 4800
rpm BLDC with rpm sag nuder full throttle to ~4000 rpm. But all this is
a guess.
