Sitting here think about this and I think this model T conversion would be a
perfect candidate for the new E-tek motor and a four quadrant controller.  

This is a really cheap high efficiency motor and the 4-quadrant controller
gives you electrically controlled forward/reverse with regen in both
directions (further extending your range).
Wilde Evolutions has the motor on sale for $445 and might be able to order
the controller for you.

Just make sure to gear it so that the motor never, EVER goes over 3600 rpm
(maybe make 3600 rpm equal 35 mph).

With a regen controller this is doable since if you are going down hill, and
wanting to pick up speed, the controller can go into regen and keep you at
30 mph(or whatever) while recharging your batteries.
