The main advantage I can see to spiral wound is you can easily
get cooling air flow past them. Other than that for a given
volume the plate style will pack in more power. Something about
not having the voids the spiral wound batteries have.
Having said that. If I went with lead acid for the 4WD EV rally
car I'd use Hawker Cylon BC 25AH cells. With their shape and
size it is quite easy to pack two 160 cell strings into a 550
Spider body. Expensive, but they pack nicely into odd shaped
areas.
Now if I only could afford to build it...
