RE: Optima alternatives
Bruce,
Sparrows are designed around the Optima YT. The critical factors are:
1. voltage = 156v
2. size = 10"x7"x8"
3. weight < 600 lbs for the entire pack
(40-45% of dry vehicle weight, 30-35% GVW)
Shoehorned in are 6 in the front and 7 under the seat (tightest space). For
the performance side, you need 12v batteries. For size consideration, you
need YT or equivalents. The only equivalent is the Exide 12v Orbital
battery, although it's a little bit taller which causes a slight clearance
problem in the front - height bumps the hood hinge.
Several of us have explored alternative batteries, but to get 156v into the
Sparrow is a feat. Floods are too large size and weight wise, and not enough
space for considering 6v or 8v batteries, without changing the
motor/controller arrangement.

Subject: Optima alternatives
I am still working on the narrative for the images of the
Los Gatos Earth Day EVent of Last Sunday. Seeing the Sparrow
images reminded me to ask the EV List this question that came
up when talking to the Sparrow driver.
Is there a US Battery or Trojan equivalent that can be used as
a replacement for the optimas?
What type of batteries can be used in the Sparrow?
I know the Sparrow drivers need the EAA's help to know how
to get into group batt buys and how get the local EAA discount.
There could also be a market if a PFC model had a lower
case profile to fit as a direct replacement for the NG3
Zivan charger they are using. It would be the best of home
and public charging if they could get a low profile PFC-20.
