Trabant conversions?

Perhaps our Euro members can shed some light on this.
DWTV mentioned that the Trabant was a staple of the
cold war. Several were made that were slow but
economical polluters.

Is the Trabant a good conversion vehicle or is it
another Yugo (keeps failing apart and not worth
the effort)?

Sorry if I offended any yugo or Trabant lovers,
but (IHMO) the best vehicle to convert is one that
will last 10 years, and will not nickel and dime
you to death.

A little research:

http://www.nickselby.com/books/sidebars/trabjoke.htm

The joke lets me know that some people were not
impressed with the Trabant. But if the vehicle had
its ICE removed, and was converted to a simple DC
system, perhaps it could over come its high pollution
reputation and keep one more vehicle from being
produced?

Trabant or not, what are the EV conversion options for
our Euro members?

-Is there a source for EV batteries, and conversion
components?
