Re: GM's inductive EV death wedge
I think Bruce hit this one square on the head - just about every
word he writes felt "100%" to me. Unfortunately, I think the
grid-rechargable tin-lizzy EV stage is already here, from what
clues the public drops in conversations I've had, and what the
majors say about extension cords and "not having to plug it in".
Sad but true, the world is on a permanent oil kick and the energy
densities that go with it, and it ain't going to quit until it
gets real painful, and then we can play the usual game of crisis
management.
I've been in the EV game for about 10 years, and I consider
myself a relative newbie, especially compared with some of the
guys that have been doing it for 20-30 years. 10 years ago I had
a lot more hope that a genuine change was going to occur, and not
too long in the future either, like a lot about now (~2000). I
had dreams of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles coming out (and "real"
hydrogen, not hydrogen reformed from hydrocarbons), and battery
EVs being plentiful, with us on a good start to a Hydrogen
Economy. Instead what I get for my ten-year wait is tailpipes
everywhere I look, the baby-step Prius's popping up like Rabbits,
and SUVs getting bigger and badder. Oh, and throw in plenty of
those nifty gasoline-powered scooters blatting down the
sidewalk - cool for the kids, eh?
But I've learned some of the lessons of the car game, and don't
need to say much more...
