JAPAN'S HOYA TO PRODUCE POWER-EFFICIENT CARBONIZED SILICON
CHIP

TOKYO, May 21, 2002 (AsiaPulse via COMTEX) -- Hoya Corp is
about to make a full-scale entry into the semiconductor
market, the company announced Monday.

The major maker of optical glass and eyeglasses will set up
a subsidiary later this month to develop and produce
carbonized silicon wafers as well as high-performance chips
made from these wafers.

This is Hoya's first attempt to make and sell
semiconductors, having so far only produced semiconductor
materials.

Carbonized silicon boasts more than three times the heat
conductivity of conventional alternatives, and can withstand
higher power voltages, meaning that even highly-integrated
circuits made from the material are extremely efficient.

When commercialized, such semiconductor circuits are
expected to help reduce the power consumption of household
appliances and information devices, and are also likely to
be in demand for use in next-generation electric vehicles
and other equipment.

Hoya is seeking to commercialize the product and make it a
major revenue source ahead of major rivals like Fujitsu Ltd
and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co
