The four-wheel-drive H2 is the first new vehicle from Hummer
since GM acquired the brand name in 1999. It is part of an
ambitious growth plan GM has laid out for high-profit SUVs.
Hummer currently builds the H1, a low-volume civilian model
of the Humvee military vehicle that captured the public's
eye during the Gulf War in 1991.
[...]
With the H2, expected to be priced at around $50,000, GM
brings the Hummer brand closer to Jeep territory. A future
H3 is expected to be priced at around $30,000, posing a
direct challenge to Jeep.

GM expects eventually to sell 35,000 to 40,000 Hummer H2s a
year, compared with Hummer H1 annual sales of around 1,000.

Army scouts hybrids; carmakers interested Fuel-battery
Humvee may fit tactical order

May 29, 2002 MISHAWAKA, Ind. The AP reported that responding
to the U.S. Army's call for a military vehicle that runs on
both fuel and electricity, AM General Corp. is working to
develop a hybrid diesel-electric Humvee.

This next-generation Humvee could use a silent electric
motor to sneak up on the enemy and then finish the job with
an electronic weapons system.

The U.S. Army's Tank, Automotive and Armaments Command's
(TACOM) interest in a hybrid vehicle has attracted a number
of interested companies, including Ford Motor Co.,
DaimlerChrysler AG and General Motors Corp.

AM General spokesman Craig Mac Nab said the Humvee, already
used extensively by the Army, is a logical candidate. "They
told us to find out what's out there, experiment with it,
adapt it and find out how it can be used," Mac Nab told the
South Bend Tribune for a report Monday.

The Army's program is called COMBATT, which stands for
Commercially Based Tactical Truck. The hybrid tactical truck
could take over for the Humvee in some situations, such as
transporting supplies, says Eric Emerton, public affairs
officer for TACOM.

"Most people forget the Humvee is a combat vehicle," Emerton
said. "It's not designed as a tactical vehicle. The goal is
to relieve the Humvee of that role."

The major automakers are interested in making a light-duty
military truck because they could produce it in plants that
make civilian vehicles. That could make it economically
feasible to produce the limited number of trucks the
military needs.

If the military did start relieving the Humvee of certain
kinds of duty with a lighter, commercially based vehicle, it
could have major implications for AM General. The company
has been the sole maker of the Humvee for almost 20 years,
delivering about 135,000 to the U.S. military during that
time.

The company's plant in Mishawaka produces between 3,000 and
4,000 Humvees a year. If the military reduced its orders in
future years, the 700 jobs at the Humvee plant, as well as
company profits, could be affected.

But the military's search for a lighter vehicle also could
lead it back to AM General. The company produces the Hummer
H2, a civilian sport-utility vehicle derived from the
Humvee.

The H2 is being produced for GM, which now owns the Hummer
brand.

Neither AM General nor GM officials would comment on whether
the H2 would be entered in the COMBATT program.

But an Army general formerly involved with TACOM, which is
overseeing COMBATT, gave the H2 a thumbs-up on a recent
visit to the H2 plant.

"This vehicle has many of the characteristics that are most
desirable for what we are developing in COMBATT," said Lt.
Gen. Roy Beauchamp, now deputy commander of the Army's
Materials Command. "It has mobility, agility and capacity.
That's what you're looking for when your life is on the
line."

UQM Technologies to Supply Propulsion Motors, Generators And
Power Electronic Controllers to Department of Defense Funded
Pre-Production Hybrid Electric HMMWV Program

GOLDEN, Colo., May 17 UQM Technologies, Inc. a developer of
alternative energy technologies, announced today that it
will supply UQM(R) propulsion motors, generators and power
electronic controllers to PEI Electronics Inc. (PEI),
Huntsville, Alabama as part of a program with AM General
Corporation, South Bend, Indiana, to develop a
pre-production High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle
(HMMWV pronounced HUMVEE(R)) powered by a hybrid electric
powertrain. AM General has manufactured the HUMVEE(R) since
1985, delivering more than 150,000 of the versatile, 4-wheel
drive vehicles to the U.S. Armed Forces and more than 30
friendly overseas nations. Funding for the program is
being provided by the Department of Defense through the
Army's Tank-Automotive and Armaments Command (TACOM), based
in Warren, Michigan.

As a precursor to this program, PEI developed and built two
prototype hybrid electric HUMVEE's(R) powered by UQM(R)
proprietary propulsion systems that have undergone extensive
durability and performance testing at the U. S. Army's
Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Aberdeen, Maryland and the
Nevada Automotive Test Center near Reno, Nevada. Results
from these tests have validated fuel economy gains of nearly
100 percent in most driving cycles together with significant
improvements in acceleration and gradeability. One of the
two prototypes completed a cross country trip from
Washington, D.C. to San Francisco, California last spring
demonstrating significant fuel economy and performance
advantages and the reliability and durability required for
military use.

Commenting on the program, UQM Technologies' President and
Chief Executive Officer, William G. Rankin, said, "The
military has always led in the adoption of advanced
technologies in its equipment and systems. Hybrid electric
HUMVEE's are no exception, providing significantly improved
mobility and fuel economy, the ability to be operated in low
noise and heat signature "stealth" mode and considerable
on-board electric power for a multitude of uses. PEI's key
role as systems integrator and power system provider has
facilitated the launch of this production-intent program
which is a key step toward the deployment of these vehicles
in military fleets worldwide in the near term. As the
military continues toward its goal to broadly adopt hybrid
electric power systems in combat vehicles, we expect our
proprietary products to be incorporated in additional
military vehicle and weapon system platforms".

Jim Belcher, PEI President, said, "The development and
deployment of this key energy technology presents a huge
opportunity for the participants and a big payback for the
Department of Defense. We are very pleased with the high
performance and efficiency of the products we are using from
UQM Technologies and appreciate their critical role in this
program. Going forward, we see hybrid electric powered
vehicles as an important strategic and enabling technology
for future combat systems".

Electrosource HORIZON(R) C2M Batteries Provide Power Supply
for Army's First Hybrid-Electric 'Humvee' 10 December 1997

Electrosource HORIZON(R) C2M Batteries Provide Power Supply
for Army's First Hybrid-Electric 'Humvee'
New Humvee Offers 'Stealth' Characteristics and Greater Performance

SAN MARCOS, Texas, Dec. 10 -- Electrosource, Inc. announced
today that the Electrosource HORIZON(R) C2M (co-extruded
composite matrix) advanced-technology batteries are being
used as the electric power source in the U.S. Army's first
prototype hybrid-electric High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled
Vehicle (HMMWV) which was unveiled this month in Huntsville,
Alabama.

Electrosource supplied 24 HORIZON C2M advanced-technology
batteries for the hybrid-electric HMMWV (Humvee) which was
designed and built by PEI Electronics, Inc. of Huntsville,
Alabama. The Humvee's four permanent magnet motors were
designed and built by Unique Mobility, Inc. of Golden,
Colorado.

When using the HORIZON C2M batteries in the all-electric
operating mode, this combat vehicle offers enhanced
performance characteristics; nearly silent running at low
speeds; and "stealth" characteristics since its "thermal
signature" makes it virtually impossible to detect using
infrared sensor technology.

Electrosource Chairman, President and CEO, Michael G.
Semmens, said, "We are pleased to be an integral part of the
team that has developed this advance that could be important
for the Army's future combat vehicles. Electrosource
batteries were selected for this prototype vehicle because
HORIZON C2M technology offers the required high
power-to-weight advantage at an affordable cost. We believe
this collaborative venture has produced a solid success for
military and commercial applications."

In a testament to the team's combined efforts, this
ultra-rugged prototype combat vehicle doubles the
acceleration and climbing capabilities while maintaining the
same gross weight as a conventional HMMWV. It can
accelerate from zero to 50 in 8 seconds and climb a 60
percent grade at 17 miles an hour. Also, it maintains the
300-mile range of the conventional Humvee, but at twice the
fuel economy. It doesn't require expensive charging
infrastructure since the HORIZON C2M batteries are charged
by the diesel generator during operation.

The first hybrid HMMWV will be delivered to the
Tank-Automotive and Armaments Command (TACOM) in late
February 1998 where it will undergo additional field
testing. If the performance capabilities of the hybrid
Hummer continue to be proven by the Army, it could also be
available for future commercial use by police, city and
state governments; government and industrial security
agencies; the Red Cross and others.

The hybrid-electric HMMWV project is funded in part by DARPA
(Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency), through the
Atlanta-based Southern Coalition for Advanced Transportation
(SCAT).

Electrosource, headquartered in San Marcos, Texas, designs,
manufactures and markets proprietary advanced energy storage
technologies and systems. Additional information about the
company is located on the internet at
