For the same reason as other units that is counterintuitive and
backwards in the US -

- The sand paper grit system (larger number - smaller grain size)
- Wire size - larger number - smaller diameter (gets even worse - 
it goes through a minimum and gors up again: 4, 2, 1, 1/0, 2/0, 4/0, ... 
- I think drill bits numbering (larger number - smaller bit diameter)

It would. It would be simple if everyone would use metric system also.
Wire gauging would be very simple there - just crossection diameter.

Don't worry, it's not going to happen soon, makes too much sense.
Poor rest of the world suffers in inconvenience of not having
foots, pounds, inches and other ingenious stuff adopted to humans...

(Of course I'm being sarcastic. Don't get me started on this one).
