Maybe, however I have been looking into the DOLCOM diagnostics for the
onboard computer. The on board charger actually isn't too bad; it allows a
bulk charge mode that can be set to a certain battery voltage followed by a
topping off charge that reduces the current but raises the charging voltage
to a second set value (375 volts). All values seem to be adjustable.
The problem might not be in the charger itself as much as the source used to
feed it. At 120 volts, the max current you will be able to pull is about
15amps or 1800 watts. At 300 volts that's only 5.5 amps of constant charge
current (assuming 90% charger efficiency) Bump to 220 and you are over
11amps of charge current; probably a bit more to the Hawker's liking but
still not 50 amps (does anyone use the Hawkers at high strings without 3
phase AC?).
My other option with this car is to use the MagneCharger system. US
Electricar outfitted this batch with what appears to be a full MC interface.
The output of the MagneCharger modules goes right into the rear of the
battery compartment; allowing you to charge it as fast as the MC can put
power in. I'm currently looking for a MagneCharge console that I can install
outside (fortunately the car is parked right next to the main disconnects
for the house)
Now the ten thousand dollar question: Can the MagneCharger handle gel cells?
Or what is the charging protocol for gel-cells? I would guess it's a bit
more gentle than the Hawkers, and with the ability to reprogram the
Dolphin's setpoints...
