Police catch teen with stolen vehicle
By Rowena Lugtu-Shaddox
FAIRFIELD -- Doing doughnuts did in a 17-year-old Lodi boy
who allegedly carjacked a government vehicle, then escaped
to Fairfield where he sped in tight circles in front of his
grandmother's Buckingham Drive home Thursday afternoon.
The teen's car antics got the attention of a neighbor who
called police when he crashed the silver Honda electric
hybrid against the curb. When the boy spotted officers, he
ran inside the house where he remained for about 30 minutes
until his mother arrived and beckoned him out.
The boy was booked into juvenile hall for carjacking,
possessing a stolen car, assault with a deadly weapon and
vehicle theft, Fairfield police Sgt. Dan Pilcher said.
The teen allegedly swiped the car from a Child Protective
Services employee in Lodi, then "tried to run over the CPS
worker," Fairfield police Lt. Gary Rodgers said.
"He told me he stole a vehicle from the social worker," the
boy's mother told police once she arrived on the 1300 block
of Buckingham Drive shortly after 1 p.m. "He said, 'Mom, if
you walk with me, I'll walk out.' "
But police wouldn't allow the woman to approach the house.
"I'm right here," the woman told her son, speaking on her
cellular telephone. "I love you. Walk out slowly."
Rodgers also spoke with the boy and promised his mother
would be on hand after he surrendered.
After a few minutes, the boy came out with his hands in the
air.
"He's a good boy," his mother said. "He was willing to come
out."
Handcuffed and in the back of a patrol car, the boy nodded
when asked if he took the car.
He rolled his eyes, smiled and shrugged his shoulder when
asked why.
