MKII"s vs my Speedometer

Yesterday, I thought I had fixed my speedometer. Ever since I had done a
bunch of work on the car (installed MKII's, added battery monitor strip and
wiring, etc...) my Speedometer has only worked if I was coasting. Touch
the accelerator and it goes erratic, generally way high.
Yesterday I replaced the wire to it's sensor with a shielded pair (instead
of the unshielded it had). All of a sudden the speedometer worked well all
the time! Yeah!
but wait... I didn't have the MKII's installed. (They were still drying
off). There were all the wires that they connect to, dangling all over the
place, but no regs.
Today I installed the MKII's again.
Speedometer now reads about double actual speed any time I'm touching the
accelerator pedal. Works fine when coasting.
sigh.

Any suggestions on how to fix this?
