The equivalent of this is plug or dynamic braking for an EV (burning up
the excess energy as heat). This is easier than regenerative braking
(capturing the energy in the battery). The common Curtis controllers
have this as a standard feature.

But, we deal with 240vac (which is 340v peak) in our homes all the time.
Our microwave ovens run on 3000vdc, our cars have 15kv on the spark
plugs, and our TV sets have 25kv on the picture tube. High voltage is
safe if properly packaged.
