Re: battery balancer PCB's - current sense

This is a pretty cool ASIC for monitoring battery current, temperature etc.
They just had a good article in Power Electronics Technology, but no
link to a web page (I think they wait a month to post the current issue
online).

Speaking of battery management, I have been working on a small
distributed voltage monitor. The current design measures 0-20VDC in
20mv increments (only a 10bit ADC on the microcontroller) and battery
temp. The circuit board is designed to be small enough to mount on top
of the battery, or direct to one terminal.

Isolation is provided by optoisolators connected to a shared bus, but
the eventual goal might be to use the twist lock fiber optic connector.
(Just cut the plastic fiber cleanly, insert into connector/transceiver
and tighten):

The connectors are a bit expensive, so I am still not sure.

I am a software guy, not much good in the analog domain.. I am using a
pair of resistors as a voltage divider to scale the voltage down to the
0-5v the ADC reads. Should I be using an opamp to buffer the input?
How sensitive will the resistors be to external temps (worst case I can
scale the results based on readings from the temp sensor)? Or is there
a better way to scale the voltage?

The bus is just 9600bps, RS232 style serial data.

I am trying to keep the part count as low as possible, with 27 batteries
in the Ranger I like these to be as cheap as possible.
