GAS-L: Re: Ceramics, Refractories and Insulations

Dear Skip and Tom R,

The description of glowing refractory fibre is the same as that produced by
LPG drying panels which resulted from research at Auckland University back
in the late 70s or early 80s. A company was formed to market the panels and
there are probably patents recorded somewhere.

These flat sheet metal box panels had a phlenim chamber back of the 1" fibre
which was retained by a mesh grill. They radiated heat from the glowing
fibre surface, but were instantly cold to touch when stopped.

At the time we saw them they were in use in the paper and fabric industry as
part of the drying process, and by all accounts were perfect for that job as
apparently there was no fire risk.
Cannot recall any names as they didn't offer any brochures as their target
market was idetified. You can at least work out what's happening now, and
maybe use it to your advantage.

Regards

Doug Williams
