The absolute objection in the stratified downdraft is that there is no way
for air to get to the reaction zone. However, in the Imbert gasifier the
nozzles would be blasting away at the perimeter of the log, reducing it's
diameter like a pencil sharpener.
Perhaps I misunderstand you, but it was not, on this informant's description,
a single massive tree trunk, but rather many logs of 4" to 6" diameter
but in long lengths, not short ones. However I can see the point
that the outer logs might have a problem of gasifying if they are wedged
up by the cone and cannot drop down near the nozzles. Would be interesting
to know what design of gasifier they were using.
