Perhaps I misunderstand you, but it was not, on this informant's description, a single massive tree trunk, but rather many logs of 4" to 6" diameter but in long lengths, not short ones.  However I can see the point that the outer logs might have a problem of gasifying if they are wedged up by the cone and cannot drop down near the nozzles.  Would be interesting to know what design of gasifier they were using.
